Former South African President Jacob Zuma to undergo surgery

Former South African President Jacob Zuma underwent surgery on Saturday and is expected to have further operations "in the coming days," prison officials said.

On August 6, 79-year-old Zuma left prison in Zulu to be hospitalized.

The trial of South Africa's former head of state on charges of corruption and bribery was scheduled to begin this week, but was again postponed due to the now-inmate's state of health.

Alongside these charges, Jacob Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in prison for refusing to appear before a commission investigating corruption cases in the state under his presidency, which ran from 2009 to 2018.

When he was hospitalized, his foundation made a post on the social network Twitter, in which it mentioned that the former President had to have a "routine check-up".
