USA: Judge upholds Donald Trump's conviction. Sentence to be announced on the 10th

EUA: Juiz confirma condenação de Donald Trump. Sentença será conhecida dia 10

The president-elect of the United States was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a secret payment of 130,000 dollars to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

This Friday, the judge in Manhattan, New York, Juan M. Merchan, confirmed Donald Trump's conviction in the case of paying bribes to former pornographic film actress Stormy Daniels. The sentence will be announced in a week's time, on January 10, days before he is due to take office as president of the United States.

According to CNN Internationall, the president-elect of the United States will be able to attend the reading of the sentence virtually or in person and the judge said that Trump should not be sentenced to prison.

"Although this court, as a matter of law, should not make any decision on sentencing before giving the parties and the defendants the opportunity to be heard, it seems appropriate at this juncture to make known the court's inclination not to impose any prison sentence," said the judge.

It should be noted that Donald Trump has been fighting for months to overturn his May 30 conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal a secret payment of 130,000 dollars to porn actress Stormy Daniels - with whom he allegedly had an extramarital affair in the past - to protect his presidential candidacy in 2016.

Last month, Donald Trump's lawyers argued that the conviction was marred by juror misconduct and began a new fight to overturn the historic verdict.

The Republican takes office on January 20 and is the first former president to be convicted of a crime and the first convicted criminal to be elected to office.
