A group of students from Lúrio University (UniLúrio) this week denounced a series of problems involving the public higher education institution, based in Nampula, in the north of the country.
According to the complaint, the problems at UniLúrio range from budget cuts to discontent among teachers, thus contributing to the proliferation of corruption, sexual harassment against students, unpaid internships for both trainee doctors and the institutions hosting the internships.
A publication on the Ikweli says that the students are tired, fed up and have no one to turn to, and have already tried to stage demonstrations, but were repelled.
"The organic units began to function in their own way, and the Faculty of Health Sciences, UniLúrio's calling card, became one of the worst. The lecturers on the courses at this faculty have started to get involved in selling notes in order to earn some money, because the extension that used to pay for research is no longer proactive and the salary paid by the state is not enough to cover the lecturers' expenses," reads the letter of complaint, quoted by the portal.
In their letter of complaint, the students claim that the Faculty of Health Sciences has become a "veritable cemetery of dreams", explaining that "anyone who has ever known the Lúrio University knows very well that it has now lost the good image it once had, and its academic system is one of the most critical it has ever been, due to the poor management of the rectorate, the management of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the coordination of the Medicine Course".
"The trainee doctors are currently sitting aimlessly. The university's teachers/employees are constantly resigning due to the lack of appreciation for their work, the lack of salaries for months, and the lack of minimum conditions to carry out their duties at the university, which was recently elevated to one of the best in the country," the document adds.
