A study by the Institute for Multiparty Democracy (IMD) presented a map of the Mozambican provinces most likely to register electoral illicit acts, with 419 already recorded between 2014 and 2019.
According to IMD Director Dércio Alfazema, constituencies in Nampula, Zambézia, Sofala, Gaza and Tete registered the highest number of electoral incidents.
The main types of incidents are political intolerance, obstruction of party caravan routes and intimidation.
One of the causes of the violence is the fierce competition between the main political parties in these areas.
The IMD investigation noted that the most critical phase is the campaigning leading up to polling day, which most often ends in violence. Meanwhile, of the crimes recorded, 52 percent occurred during voting day.
According to the IMD, these events contributed to Mozambique's decline in the global democracy index. (DW/OPais)
