The state recovered 1,599,451,655.75 meticais as part of the collection of assets obtained through criminal activities, according to figures released by the Attorney General's Office (PGR).
According to Beatriz Buchili, in 2023 the Central Asset Recovery Office (GCRA) seized 214,084,130.34 meticais in cash and various movable and immovable assets valued at 1,385,367,525.41 meticais.
Of the 88 pieces of movable property seized, there were 65 vehicles and 23 motorcycles, 48 of which were valued at a total of 23,777,357.96 meticais; of the 57 properties, 30 were valued at a total of 1,165,036,958.13 meticais; and miscellaneous items were valued at 19,866,185.94 meticais.
During that period, the prosecutor said, 84 asset and financial investigation cases were processed, 25 of which were referred to the respective bodies for processing.
She explained that the low number of cases processed is due to the lack of agents from the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), the Financial Information Office, the Registry and Notary Services, the Tax Authority on an exclusive basis in collaboration with the GCRA; and the low number of specialized financial analysts.
"Another constraint is the fact that the Central Asset Recovery Office is not yet represented throughout the country, but only has focal points that do not have a technical structure to support it in carrying out its duties under the law," he said.
