Luís Artur, a specialist in disaster risk management, said today that the southern region of the country is not prepared to deal with cyclones.
"Right now, as a country, we are prepared to respond to cyclones that occur in the central and northern regions. But what if, in the future, we start to have cyclones in the south of the country? What if cold fronts, like the one we had in Matola and Boane in February, which brought a lot of rain, start occurring very frequently?" the expert asks.
The expert, who was speaking during a national meeting on preparedness and resilience to tropical cyclones in southern Africa, says it is important to improve the early warning system against cyclones and the way Mozambican public policies are designed for severe weather events.
Maputo has been hosting an international meeting on cyclone resilience in southern Africa since the 2nd of this month. The event, attended by 35 experts in the field from Mozambique, South Africa, Madagascar, Malawi and the UK, aims to help reorient the Mozambican government's strategies in the face of cyclones and floods, as Mozambique is now entering the rainy season.
