The Association of Mozambican Writers (AEMO) deplores the escalation of post-election violence throughout the country, with the loss of citizens' lives. That's why, in a statement, they put forward some proposals to stop the violence that has characterized the last few days.
In a statement, AEMO deplores the climate of violence, which "has been claiming human lives", involving citizens protesting against the election results announced by the National Electoral Commission and agents of the Forces of Law and Order, namely the police.
"Violence, whether by civilians or by agents of law and order, is the wrong mechanism for addressing disagreements in society, as it only serves to increase feelings of hatred and revenge," the statement reads.
According to the document, Mozambican writers decided to go public to contribute proposals to resolve the current conflict and to create a Mozambique of Peace, Concord, Reconciliation and Unity, but not without first presenting its causes.
"The present post-election conflict has its roots, among other causes, in the Mozambican political system, where the powers of the different organs of state are confused and have not shown themselves to be independent, creating relationships of promiscuity and harmful interference with each other." Allied to the fact that there is a social stratum, especially young people, penalized by the consequences of the mismanagement of public affairs, above all corruption and the consequent high and unbearable cost of living. And also with the functioning of electoral bodies, whose conduct has been pointed out as a constant source of suspicion by citizens, who do not believe in their independence and credibility. The electoral bodies are perceived as important parties, sources of creation and maintenance of these conflicts, among various other factors.
The writers propose an urgent meeting between the two most voted presidential candidates, Daniel Francisco Chapo and Venâncio António Bila Mondlane, with a three-point agenda: agree to end the current climate of instability and violence, to avoid further loss of human life and destruction of infrastructure, with a serious and genuine commitment that, in the meeting, mutual compromises should be made and never guided by arrogance or radical positions; Start the negotiation process to create a platform of understanding that includes the creation of a government of effective inclusion, with a view to opening the door to a process of profound reform of the state, involving and benefiting the whole of society, without exclusion, with particular emphasis on the young, who are the most numerous and undoubtedly the most penalized by social differences; and the creation of a Committee of Wise Men, to design the architecture of the dialogue between the two most voted presidential candidates, moderate the meetings between them and report to the people on their progress.
The Association also suggests that the two presidential candidates should quickly go public and express their commitment to peace, stability and the harmonious development of the country, going beyond expressions of hatred or others that incite violence. (O Pais)
