The contingency plan for the Mozambican capital, Maputo, for the rainy season that began in the country last October, is valued at more than 71 million meticais.
According to the spokeswoman for Maputo City Council, Alice de Abreu, who was speaking to public broadcaster Televisão de Moçambique (TVM) during an interview about the celebrations for the 136th anniversary of the city of Maputo on Friday, UN-Women and the World Bank have already expressed their willingness to provide financial support for the plan's activities, stressing that the interventions have already begun before the start of the rainy season.
Meanwhile, the government has yet to approve the National Contingency Plan, a vital document for preventing and mitigating the impact of extreme events, but calculations suggest that it should cost around 203 million dollars.
The rainy season ends in March 2024.
Regarding transport, one of the most challenging sectors in the city, the spokeswoman admits that there will be a solution within the next 60 days, as the implementation of the urban mobility project is underway.
"The city of Maputo is one of the beneficiaries of this project called "MOVE Maputo", which is under the purview of the government, and with this project we will have taken some care of the issue of access roads and transport in our city," said Abreu.
At least 17 kilometers of roads will be rehabilitated and asphalted in the cities of Maputo and Matola, as part of the project to improve urban mobility in the Greater Maputo metropolitan region.
To be implemented by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the project includes the rehabilitation of Avenida 24 de Julho, between Avenida da Tanzania and Avenida Zâmbia, in Maputo city, over a length of 3.2 kilometers.
