Nine people died and 17 were injured in the floods that hit the municipalities of Maputo, Matola and Boane, in Maputo province, and Xai-Xai, in Gaza province, both in southern Mozambique, last week.
According to the spokesman for the Council of Ministers, Filimão Suaze, who was speaking to the press on Tuesday (02), after the end of an ordinary session of that body, the rains caused by a low-pressure system that hit the south of the country, also affected 96,239 people, which corresponds to 20,215 families, and flooded 20,023 houses, completely destroyed another 99 and 173 partially.
"The rains affected 63 schools and left 113 classrooms destroyed, which resulted in 78,627 pupils missing classes in the four municipalities," the spokesman said, quoted by AIMHe pointed out that around 13,584 hectares of various crops were flooded.
As for the roads, the rains damaged around 265 kilometers in the four municipalities, 28 affected villages and three drifts.
