The Federation of Contractors of Mozambique accuses the government of favoring Chinese construction companies when awarding public works contracts. The federation also expressed concern about the state's debt to the business community, especially small and medium-sized enterprises.
Quoted by RFI, the president of the Mozambican Federation of Contractors, Bento Machaila, denounced the existence of a "cartel in the construction area". "The Chinese are creating a cartel in the construction area, they create companies in which the owners are the same, they form prices (ten companies have almost identical prices and this is to influence the evaluation). If the work doesn't go to A, it goes to B. If it doesn't go to B, it goes to C. We're monitoring this and the state isn't seeing it. Works are being given to Chinese companies and many of them don't have a license," said Bento Machaila.
"As a federation, we think the state should abandon this because direct awarding is being abused with arguments that are not valid. What is happening is that direct agreements are benefiting a very small group of contractors," he added.
