Local elections: EU calls on authorities to guarantee exercise of people's right to freedom

Eleições autárquicas: UE apela autoridades a garantirem o exercício do direito à liberdade das pessoas

The European Union (EU) has condemned the deaths of people during demonstrations by Mozambique's largest opposition party, Renamo, against the general results of the sixth local elections held on October 11.

Faced with police brutality in the protests promoted by Renamo, which does not accept the results of these local elections, the EU called on the Mozambican authorities to guarantee the exercise of people's right to freedom.

Quoted by RFI, the European Union ambassador to Mozambique, Antonino Maggiore, argued that the right to demonstrate must be guaranteed within democratic principles; "we stress our concern and also our unhappiness at these deaths at demonstrations. The use of force must always be proportional and the freedom to demonstrate guaranteed".

The European diplomat also assured that the institution is monitoring the entire electoral process and the allegations of fraud and believes in the wisdom of the organs of the administration of justice in the decisions to be taken. "We have confidence in the country's legal system in the legal process and now with the role of the constitutional council to tackle these issues," said Antonino Maggiore.

At the moment, the Constitutional Council is expected to promulgate or reject the results released by the National Electoral Commission, which gave Frelimo victory in 64 of the 65 municipalities in the October 11 ballot.
