This Tuesday, the MDM party appealed to the Constitutional Council to restore "electoral truth", accusing the Beira District Electoral Commission of having diverted votes in favor of the ruling party.
The representative of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the party that has since been declared the winner of the election in that city in the center of the country, said that the political force does not agree with the results announced so far, because "we did our tabulation and we had around 68% of votes, contrary to what we heard".
Domingos Albuquerque, who was speaking at a press conference in the city of Beira, said that his party won the elections in Beira with a large lead and demanded that "justice be restored" for the residents of that municipality.
"The MDM should have around 33 members in the municipal assembly and the district committee did everything it could to reduce the number of MDM members in the assembly. We're talking about losing at least five seats in the municipal assembly and that's a lot," said Albuquerque, quoted by Lusa.
The party had already raised the issue with the Beira District Electoral Commission and the Judicial Court, but found no satisfactory response, and so decided to appeal to the Constitutional Council yesterday.
"That's nine percent of votes taken away from the MDM. So that's what made us appeal to the Constitutional Council, in the hope of seeing legality restored. The CED in the city of Beira gave 24,000 votes to Frelimo [Mozambique Liberation Front]. We don't know where they came from, to say that there were phantom votes in favor of the Frelimo party," he said.
According to the intermediate district tabulation notice presented in Beira by the president of the District Electoral Commission, Otávio Paulo, the MDM, the second largest opposition party in the country, was re-elected to the leadership of that municipality with 112,963 votes (58.16%), followed by the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), with 73,302 votes (37.74%), and the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), with 7,045 votes (3.63%).
With these results, the MDM has 28 members in the municipal assembly of the second most politically important city in Mozambique, Frelimo 18 and the main opposition party, Resistência Nacional de Eleições (Renamo), just 2.
The sixth local elections in Mozambique took place in 65 municipalities on October 11, including 12 new municipalities, which went to the polls for the first time.
