He or She: Portuguese children will have the autonomy to decide how they want to be treated

Ele ou Ela: Crianças portuguesas terão autonomia para decidir como querem ser tratadas

The Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) is proposing a bill that would allow children up to the age of six to choose or adopt a "he or she" form of address, regardless of their birth gender.

According to the PS, the law aims to guarantee the exercise of students' right to gender identity and expression and sexual characteristics.

In this sense, this means that a student whose name is Manuel can choose to be called Manuela, and vice versa. But they can also be called by other names that they choose, other than their official name as a citizen, within the school. Depending on the child's decision, the school community will have to respect it and pass it on.

Schools must respect children's clothing and guarantee their privacy and uniqueness. Educational establishments must also adapt the child's internal documentation.

Portugal's Correio da Manhã recently reported that students will be able to choose the bathrooms and changing rooms they want to use.

The proposal stipulates that schools should have a person to whom those concerned can turn to ensure that their preferences are followed up and complied with.
