EDM restores electricity after Cyclone Jude in Nampula and Zambézia

EDM restabelece energia eléctrica após a passagem do ciclone Jude em Nampula e Zambézia

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has announced that it has already restored the electricity supply in ten of the 19 districts affected by the passage of Cyclone Jude in the provinces of Nampula and Zambézia.

According to the newspaper RigorAfter Cyclone Jude hit the region, EDM reported that two high-voltage towers were destroyed, as well as 48 kilometers of medium-voltage lines and 26 kilometers of low-voltage lines. In addition, six transformer stations were damaged, affecting a total of more than 430,000 customers in 17 districts in Nampula and two in Zambézia.

During a visit to Nampula province to monitor the progress of the work to replace the electricity grid, the chairman of EDM's board of directors, Joaquim Ou-chim, said last Friday (14) that, despite the progress made, the conclusion of the repairs will depend on the conditions of access to the affected areas.

According to the source, the recovery services are expected to be completed within 15 days.

"The next step will be to build a resilient construction, which involves concrete and metal poles or revising the specifications for wooden poles. This will require more detailed studies and the cost will certainly be higher," explained the PCA, adding that most of the poles that have suffered are over 15 years old and no longer have much capacity to withstand the storms of cyclone magnitude.

According to the state-owned electricity company, the initial recovery of all 19 districts affected by Jude in the two provinces of Nampula and Zambézia will cost 100 million meticais.
