Hidden Debts: Sentencing of the 19 defendants begins tomorrow

The sentencing of the 19 defendants implicated in the country's biggest financial scandal (Undeclared Debts/Hidden Debts) begins this Wednesday (30), and is expected to last until at least December 6th.

"The reading of the sentence will take place over five days," said José Macarringue, a judge and spokesman for the Maputo City Judicial Court, warning that "it may be that the reading of the sentence goes on until later, it will depend on the judge himself."

The event will take place in the Supreme Court tent on the grounds of the Maximum Security Prison, known as B.O., in Matola, Maputo province, where the trial took place.

As was the case during the trial, the reading of the sentences will be open to live media coverage.

The 19 defendants involved in this case are accused, among other things, of association to commit crimes, passive corruption for an illegal act, abuse of office or function, money laundering, possession of prohibited weapons, embezzlement and falsifying documents.

In this case, the Public Prosecutor's Office is asking for compensation of 2.7 billion dollars, in favor of the Mozambican state, as it believes there is sufficient evidence to illustrate the embezzlement of 2.2 billion dollars by the defendants.
