UniLúrio debts delay dreams of health science students in Nampula

Dívidas da UniLúrio atrasam sonhos de estudantes de ciências de saúde em Nampula

The president of the Student Nucleus of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Lúrio University (UniLúrio) in Nampula, Xavier Felisberto, revealed that more than a thousand students from different courses have seen their dreams of training delayed.

A publication by VOA says that this is due to the suspension of classes almost eight months ago, because the university has accumulated debts of at least 47,000 dollars with teachers, particularly in one of its largest internship fields, the Central Hospital of Nampula.

However, for the student leader, the situation jeopardizes the quality of training and could lead to some students dropping out.

"These are health sciences, the idea of dealing with practice every day should be a tradition. For eight or nine months we've had no theoretical basis and no practice. Resuming classes is going to be challenging," said the source quoted in the same publication.

However, the Minister for Higher Education, Daniel Nivagarra, called for a resolution and the university rector's office removed some of the heads of the faculty in question, in addition to settling debts with teachers and regularizing contracts.

In this context, the rector, Leda Hugo, promised that classes would resume in August, while confirming the existence of a debt in the field of internships with the students. "We have debts with the Central Hospital of Nampula and we are now in the process of paying them off," said the rector, who also confirmed that the students missed the first semester of this year because of the "disorganization" of the institution she heads.
