Dispute over girlfriend ends in death in the nation's capital

Disputa por namorada termina em morte na capital do país

A 16-year-old minor is being held at the 12th Police Station of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), accused of stabbing an 18-year-old friend to death after a dispute over an alleged girlfriend in the Maxaquene neighborhood, in the city of Maputo.

According to Jornal Notícias, quoting the PRM spokeswoman in Maputo city, Marta Perreira, after committing the crime, the teenager took refuge in a relative's house, but was handed over to the police by his own parents.

"We commend the attitude of the teenager's parents in handing him over to the police and we call on other parents to also take this initiative in relation to their children with deviant behavior," said the PRM spokeswoman, adding that the victim was taken to Maputo Central Hospital, but couldn't resist his injuries and lost his life the same day.

However, despite the fact that the accused confessed to the crime, according to the authorities, "he is already facing criminal charges and will be referred to the Attorney General's Office (PGR) and then to court to be held responsible for what happened".
