Jazz Day celebrated at Maputo Central Hospital

Dia do Jazz celebrado no Hospital Central de Maputo

Once again, Maputo's Central Hospital (HCM) will host the International Jazz Day celebrations today at 10 a.m., following a tradition created by musician and social activist Moreira Chonguisa since 2019.

"The patron of the Moreira Chonguiça Foundation, Moreira Chonguiça, who was the first Mozambican musician to take part in the All-Star lineup for the International Jazz Day Global Concert, held in 2024 in Tangier, Morocco, will pay a visit to the Oncology Service (cancer patients) of the HCM followed by a concert in the Amphitheatre of the Orthopaedics Department of the same hospital," says the organization's press release.

The event will be attended by the HCM Board, UNESCO's representative in Mozambique, the diplomatic corps, cooperation partners, guests and others.

April 30 was designated International Jazz Day by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role in uniting people in all corners of the globe.

International Jazz Day is chaired and led by Irina Bokova, former Director-General of UNESCO, and the legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who is UNESCO's Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and President of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz.

It should be noted that Moreira Chonguiça has been a UNESCO partner since 2016 for the design and production of the International Jazz Day celebrations in Mozambique on April 30; and is also a partner of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz in New York, United States of America, as part of the International Jazz Day celebrations.
