Around 50 students and four journalists arrested in march "thwarted" by police

Detidos cerca de 50 estudantes e quatro jornalistas em marcha “frustrada” pela Polícia

The legal secretary of the Angolan Students' Movement (MEA), António Cahebo, denounced the arrest of around 50 students who wanted to march peacefully.

Among those arrested is Joaquim Lutambi, the deputy leader of the MEA, and at least four journalists who wanted to cover the event. However, they were later released.

Despite the arrests in the early afternoon, a small group decided to continue with the march to the Provincial Government headquarters in central Luanda, where they read their manifesto in public.

"How come the MPLA government [Angola's ruling party] spends millions on parties that do nothing and doesn't offer quality education? It takes from the state coffers what should go to school materials," the students questioned during the reading of the manifesto.

The group also demanded the resignation of the Minister of Education, Luísa Grilo, and the provincial governor of Luanda, Luís Nunes. "What we are seeking is a right. And those who violate it must be held accountable," they added.

Shortly after the manifesto was read out, the police approached and asked the demonstrators to disperse. (DW)
