285 citizens arrested for illegal migration in Tete

Detidos 285 cidadãos por migração ilegal em Tete

The national authorities arrested 285 citizens, including nationals and foreigners, last week in the province of Tete, when they were trying to cross border crossings into countries in the region.

The 127 detainees are Mozambicans, 90 Malawians, 37 Zambians and 31 Zambians, all of whom did not have travel documents.

However, compared to the same period last year, this number of cases represents a reduction of around 100 citizens.

Deolinda Matsinhe, head of the public relations department at the Republic of Mozambique Police provincial command in Tete, said that the foreigners had been repatriated.

According to Matsinhe, there are campaigns to raise awareness among the population to adopt good practices in the districts that share borders with Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.

"We really have seen a reduction in border violations in Tete province. However, we can't relax. We know that it has been a seasonal situation in which there is a greater influx at certain times," she said, quoted by the Radio Mozambique.
