Gang that robbed a Brazilian citizen in Tete arrested

Detida quadrilha que roubou a um cidadão brasileiro em Tete

Three individuals who were part of a gang that stole 160,000 meticais from a Brazilian citizen in the city of Tete last Saturday were arrested today by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).

According to “Notícias”, the group includes Mozambican, Zimbabwean and Malawian citizens.

Speaking to the press, the accused explained that they spotted the victim with the money when she came out of the bank in a supermarket in Matundo, and then followed her to the city center.

SERNIC spokeswoman Celina Roque explained that the individuals used a device to unlock the car after the citizen parked it in the area known as “Ghandi”, convinced that the doors were properly locked.

“They have been carrying out robberies of this kind here in the city of Tete recently. There are still two accomplices at large, but we are still on the ground in order to arrest them and bring them to justice.

They claim they were just passing through the city, but there is evidence that this is not true. One of the detainees was arrested in 2017 for the same type of crime, served his sentence and was released this year,” he said.

It is known, however, that the stolen money has not been recovered, as most of it is with the fugitives. The detainees confessed that they had already sent the money to their families, who are outside Tete. The car used to follow the victim was, however, seized. (News).
