The Judicial Court of the district of Lichinga, Niassa province, sentenced the former delegate of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD) in that province to eight years in prison on Tuesday (02), after concluding that the charges of embezzlement of material goods and food intended to support the victims of Cyclone Freddy, which occurred last year, were proven.

Friday Taibo was accused of embezzling various goods, including rice, beans, cooking oil, corn flour and plastic rolls. The misappropriated goods were valued at 738,000 meticais.

Cited by Televisão de Moçambique (TVM)Taibo was also sentenced to a one-year fine at a daily rate of 10% of the national minimum wage.

The Lichinga court also convicted the two co-defendants who are also accused of masterminding the embezzlement, in collusion with their boss. One of them will have to serve seven years in prison, while the other will have to serve six years. The three will also have to pay compensation to the state in the order of 738,138 meticais.
