The group of unknown citizens destroyed 60 graves in the Old Cemetery, in the Napipine district of Nampula city, according to a press release from the municipality.

The note expresses the indignation and repudiation of the institution, which called the act cowardly and disrespectful, as it hurts the sensibilities of the entire community, "particularly those who have lost loved ones".

The city council has promised to make a statement today.
