Syrian regime that led for 50 years overthrown

Derrubado regime sírio que liderava há 50 anos

On Sunday, Syrian rebel groups overthrew the regime of Bashar Al-Assad, which has been in power for more than 50 years.

The rebels seized the city of Damascus as a result of coordinated action between the various groups led by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), in a context of terrorist attacks.

Al-Assad is a refugee in Moscow.

The United States has said that it will cooperate with the "locals" despite considering that some of the HTS have strong ties to the Islamic State.

HTS has been designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the United States, Turkey, the United Nations and several other Western nations.

In a statement on Sunday, Joe Biden pointed out that the US will support the Syrians with the help of Jordan, Lebanon, Israel and Iraq, "should any threat arise from Syria during this period of transition".
