Cholera outbreak declared in Quelimane with several deaths

Declarado surto de cólera em Quelimane com vários mortos

The Minister of Health, Armindo Tiago, announced yesterday that an outbreak of cholera has been declared in the city of Quelimane, in the center of the country, the most devastated by Cyclone Freddy and where the disease has killed six people since Wednesday.

"The provincial authorities should declare [the outbreak of] cholera today and an Emergency Operational Center will be set up to ensure regular data sharing," said Armindo Tiago in the city.

Data from the provincial authorities indicate that since Wednesday, of the more than 100 patients seen at the Cholera Treatment Center at Quelimane Hospital, six have lost their lives.

Neighborhoods with precarious conditions, lack of drinking water, sanitation and hygiene conditions are the most worrying for the authorities in Quelimane, especially after the destruction caused by Cyclone Freddy - which last week claimed 53 lives in Zambezia province.
