DDR: Renamo's last military base closes today

The last military base belonging to the Renamo party will be closed today in the Gorongosa district, in Sofala province, central Mozambique. The ceremony will be attended by the president of Mozambique's largest opposition, Ossufo Momade.

The event will also serve to demobilize 350 Renamo fighters, according to the UN Secretary-General's special envoy. According to the electronic Mozambique ChannelMirko Manzoni has been in Sofala for a few days now.

The closure of the base and the demobilization of the armed men marks the culmination of the process of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration of Renamo's military wing.

Renamo's military wing maintained 16 active military bases, which were gradually closed down. As of today, 5,221 guerrillas have been demobilized.

For Manzoni, the decommissioning of the last base is a good result because the commitment was for all the combatants to spend Christmas at home with their families.

Regarding the integration of some Renamo troops into the ranks of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, Manzoni said that it didn't make sense because many of them have passed their age and need other requirements.

The Maputo Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement was signed in August 2019 by the Mozambican Head of State, Filipe Nyusi, and the president of Renamo, Ossufo Momade, and provides, among other things, for the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) of the armed arm of the main opposition party.

The agreement was the third between the government and Renamo, all three having been signed after cycles of armed violence, mainly in the center of the country. Under the DDR agreement, the bases at Savane, Muxúnguè, Inhaminga, Chemba, Marínguè, in Sofala; Mabote, in Inhambane; Tambara, Mossurize, Báruè, in Manica; Zóbuè in Tete; Murrupula, in Nampula province, among others, were deactivated.
