SCJ considers judges' demands legitimate

CSMJ considera legítimas as reivindicações dos juízes

The demands of the magistrate judges are legitimate, according to the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSMJ), which sees dialog as a way of finding common ground with the government.

The body that represents the class of judges has "shied away" from commenting on the legal aspects of the announcement of a 30-day strike, already scheduled for August 9.

"The Superior Council of the Judiciary has decided as follows: to consider the judges' claims legitimate and to recommend that the Mozambican Association of Judges opt for negotiation or other legally appropriate means, always guaranteeing the continuity of services, as a way of safeguarding the fundamental right of access to justice," says the Council that oversees judges, quoted by the The Country.

Among other things, the Mozambican judges are demanding financial independence from the executive, security for the class, as well as the resumption of their salaries and allowances prior to the introduction of the Single Salary Table. If they go on strike, the judges guarantee that they will provide at least the minimum services.
