South Africa's Energy Crisis: Government officially ends state of calamity

The South African government has officially ended the state of national disaster it implemented just under two months ago to deal with SA's power crisis.

In a public diary quoted by News24, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Thembi Nkadimeng, said today that the state of calamity has been lifted.

"All regulations and directions made under section 27(2) of the [National Disaster] Act in accordance with the declaration of the national state of disaster to deal with the impact or severe restriction of electricity supply are revoked with immediate effect," reads a statement quoted by the local press.

In the same statement, the government said that the state of disaster was a "necessary response" to the impact that the critical levels of load shedding were having on the economy and on vulnerable sectors such as health and small businesses.

The government noted that, following the declaration of the state of calamity, a series of regulations were put in place to support the Energy Action Plan and ensure an integrated response across the government.

"The state of calamity has allowed the government to intensify the interventions of the National Energy Crisis Committee in terms of the Energy Action Plan," reads the statement.
