Covid-19: WHO approves emergency use of Indian CovovaxTM vaccine

The World Health Organization (WHO) has authorized the emergency use of the Indian CovovaxTM covid-19 vaccine. This is the ninth covid-19 vaccine approved by the WHO.

This is the first vaccine produced by the Serological Institute of India and licensed from the US laboratory Novavax that is designed from proteins that trigger an immune response.

CovovaxTM vaccine is administered in two doses and can be stored at normal refrigeration temperatures (between 2ºC and 8ºC).

Still, the WHO expert committee on vaccination has not yet defined the age groups for which the vaccine is recommended.

The approval of emergency use of vaccines enables their purchase by the universal and equitable distribution mechanism Covax, designed to provide the poorest countries with covid-19 vaccines.
