North Korea warns it will use nuclear weapons if attacked

South Korea spoke of its military arsenal and got a swift and harsh response from North Korea. This Tuesday, Kim Jong-un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, warned that the North Koreans will react with nuclear weapons if attacked by the South.

Kim Yo Jong, who is one of the leading figures in his older brother's regime, made the warning after South Korea's defense minister assured that he would be able to launch "a preemptive strike" against the North.

On Friday, Suh Wook said that the South has a very varied arsenal of missiles, with enough range and technology to "effectively and quickly hit any target in North Korea."

Kim Yo Jong told the state-run KCNA news agency, quoted by Reuters, that the South Korean minister made a "very serious mistake" in making these kinds of statements, in addition to describing them as a "pipe dream" and the "hysteria of a lunatic."

In his response on Tuesday, Kim Yo Jong assured that the North does not want a war and that South Korea is not its main adversary. But he made it clear that it will retaliate if provoked, which would leave the South Korean military "on the verge of total destruction and ruin."

"If South Korea, for some reason, chooses military action such as the 'preliminary attack' conveyed by Suh Wook, the situation will change. In that case, South Korea will become a target," the Pyongyang regime warned.

Kim Yo Jong still assured that "South Korea is not our main enemy," implicitly referring to the United States.

Suh Wook's statements came after North Korea tested several long-range missiles throughout this year, with the Pentagon believing that the North Koreans may test nuclear weapons again.

The climate between North and South has gradually become more tense. In March, North Korea dismantled an infrastructure that served as a symbol of the unification of the Koreas, and rebuilt tunnels used in nuclear weapons testing sites.
