The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, acknowledged today in Belém, Brazil, that the discussions on climate targets are no longer generating consensus.
Speaking at the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (Conference of the Parties - COP30), he recalled that ten years ago countries agreed to try to limit global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels.
“The only question was how fast could we go? Today, unfortunately, that consensus is over,” he said.
This includes the UK itself, where opponents consider the net zero emissions target to be very difficult and expensive to achieve.
Starmer describes green policies, however, as a “win-win” situation.
“The greater our collective ambition, the more progress we will make in combating the climate crisis and the greater the opportunities we will create,” he said.
