COP26: Abandon fossil fuels and invest in renewables

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) was, yesterday, dominated by the theme of energy, aiming for a phase-out of fossil sources while making the transition to electricity generation from renewable sources in order to achieve climate change containment targets.

In the first session of the day, it was proposed to abandon coal as a source of energy production, which is responsible for more than half of the carbon emissions of fossil fuels.

The second debate focused on progress toward ending financing for the coal industry.

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change presented delegates with the latest findings on the scientific basis behind climate change.

On the other side of the governments debate center, climate activists who have made their way to Glasgow are promoting a "toxic tour" of the Scottish city to discuss its role in the industrial revolution, as well as to criticize investments in fossil fuels.

The COP26 brings together more than 120 political leaders and thousands of experts, activists and public decision-makers, and ends on the 12th. In the meantime, the countries' contributions to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, whose target is 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius, are to be updated.
