Renamo is holding its long-awaited National Council next Thursday (16) in the city of Nampula, the first since last year's elections, in which it came out weakened. For Mozambican academic Pedrito Cambrão, this meeting represents a decisive opportunity to overcome the unprecedented crisis the party is going through.
"It is hoped that the dots will be put on the ii, or the black and white, to get out of the doldrums," said Cambrão, stressing that the event should not just serve to fulfill the agenda, but be a real space for advice and political repositioning.
In his analysis, Renamo needs to reinvent itself and make a real "restart", rescuing its role as the main opposition force and contributing to the consolidation of democracy in Mozambique. However, he warned that the preparation of the Council is marked by weaknesses, such as the lack of clarity in the selection of invitees, which "does not obey regimental criteria" and could open up space for internal contestation.
Quoted by Rigor NewspaperCambrão also criticizes the prevalence of concerns about the status quo, to the detriment of the party's growth and affirmation. "This behavior is not flattering for a political force with a historical framework," he observed, adding that transparency is an indispensable requirement. "As a party that calls itself democratic, it must make use of this prerogative. Duralex, sed lex" [the law is harsh, but it must be complied with]," he stressed.
Renamo has been experiencing instability since 2024, when Ossufo Momade's leadership was accused by internal sectors of "selling" the election results. The scenario led to the closure of provincial offices and even the national headquarters, generating riots, aggressions and arrests of members.
For Cambrão, the National Council "must be the turning point that allows Renamo to regain unity, credibility and the capacity to mobilize, putting the interests of the party and the country above personal agendas".
