The presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, said this morning in Maputo that he had successfully brought labor activities in the country to a standstill at around 95%, with the remaining five percent being essential services.
Mondlane calls the call for protests a success because, according to him, the objectives have been achieved.
"I urge people to go home. Dad has already been paralyzed for about 95% and this means that we have achieved our objectives. The primary objective was exactly a national strike, a general strike, the suspension of all work activity, public and private. I think that was achieved. The issue of the posters was a complement to the murders of Elvino [and Paulo Guambe]. It was this part that the police prevented.... Everyone adhered to the call for a general strike".
In Venâncio Mondlane's view, Mozambicans and Mozambique are to be congratulated, because there were no acts of violence or vandalism of public or private property on the part of the demonstrators. "It's just that we've always stood up for ourselves and managed to fulfill our role."
