Condominiums make it difficult to carry out a population census

Condomínios dificultam a realização de censo populacional

The National Statistics Institute (INE) says it is having difficulties accessing the interior of condominiums and calculating the number of households and their respective data.

The institution says that this is due to the restrictive security policies imposed on condominiums. From INE's point of view, it was to be expected that such difficulties would not occur, assuming that these are areas or residences inhabited by people with some level of education or literacy.

"We face difficulties even in prime areas, where we thought we might find greater understanding on the part of the information providers because they are people with a certain level of education and understanding, but not always. We also realized that we can't give up because of a difficulty," said the National Director of Sensos and Inquéritos, Alexandre Marrupi, quoted by STV.

The attitude of the condominiums limited the collection of data for the 2022/23 Demographic Health Survey. INE already foresees difficulties in the next population census in 2027.

Despite this, the INE proposes that condominium unions nominate, by consensus, condominium owners to be trained by the INE and carry out the census.

"We're thinking of making a memorandum with the heads of the condominiums so that, for example, they can nominate suitable condominium owners, whom they trust, so that they can be prepared by the National Statistics Institute to be able to collect data within their condominiums," he said.

The Demographic Health Survey 2022/23 will be launched in the next two weeks. It was last published in 2018.
