The Chinese community in Mozambique has donated several tons of supplies for the victims of the floods in southern and central Mozambique, a source from the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) announced.
In total, the Chinese community donated 50 tons of cereals, 6,200 liters of cooking oil and other products (including food, clothing and blankets), César Tembe, national director of the INGD's Prevention and Mitigation Division, told the Chinese news agency Xinhua, quoted by Lusa.
"We have a lot of people in need of support, I think this donation will help us meet the needs we have to support the affected populations," said Tembe.
The products will benefit victims affected by the floods in the provinces of Gaza, Inhambane and Maputo, in the south, and Sofala, in the center.
In Mozambique, floods recur at this time of year, but even so, rainfall has been higher than expected: in the week of February 6 to 12 alone, it rained almost three times the average for the months of February, according to the National Meteorological Institute (INAM).
The southern region of Mozambique, namely Maputo and its surroundings, were hit by heavy rain and flooding during this period, causing 11 deaths, injuring 43,500 people and leaving several public infrastructures damaged.
