Private airline Fly Índico reconnects Pemba and Palma in Cabo Delgado

Companhia aérea privada Fly Índico volta a ligar Pemba e Palma em Cabo Delgado

The private company Fly Índico announced this Monday that it will resume flights between Pemba and Palma, in Cabo Delgado, a connection that was interrupted following armed rebel attacks in the north of the country.

"The connection will resume on November 28 and we plan to operate at least two flights a week, on Mondays and Fridays," Alfrad Venichand, Fly Índico's reservations assistant, told Lusa.

The connection, which was interrupted following the rebel attack on Palma in March 2021, will be made by a Cessna Caravan aircraft, with capacity for 10 passengers, said the same source from the Mozambican-owned company.

"We used to travel this route. In fact, during one of the attacks in Palma, we helped the authorities get some people out. We feel safe now and we're going to operate again," added Alfred Venichand.

Palma was the target of one of the most notorious attacks carried out by the rebels who have been terrorizing the province of Cabo Delgado for five years, when on March 24, 2021, the insurgents invaded the headquarters of that district, causing dozens of deaths and injuries, as well as the flight of thousands of people.

The district is home to a natural gas exploration project led by TotalEnergies, the largest private investment in Africa (around 20 billion euros), which has since been suspended due to insecurity in the region.

The province of Cabo Delgado has been terrorized by armed violence since 2017, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
