The US government may suspend 500 million dollars in aid from the Millennium Challenge Account (MCC) development agency. According to Africa Monitor IntelligenceThis measure is due to the current electoral conflicts.
The measure will take effect "in the event that the [Mozambican] government fails to clarify and correct the multiple electoral irregularities resulting from the October 11 local elections," the portal reads.
Mozambique signed the Coastal Connectivity and Resilience agreement with the MCC on September 21 of this year in Washington, USA. The protocol was signed between the Minister of Economy and Finance, Max Tonela, and the president of the MCC, Alice Albright. The President of the Republic of Mozambique witnessed the act.
Most of the money to be made available will go to Zambézia province. The capital, Quelimane, is run by the Renamo party, with Manuel de Araújo as its president.
Zambezia province was one of the most devastated by Cyclone Freddy earlier this year.
According to the National Electoral Commission, the Frelimo party won the October 11 local elections in the municipality. Renamo does not recognize the results and accuses the electoral bodies and Frelimo of fraud. Zambézia is known as one of the most hostile areas for Frelimo.
Accusations of electoral fraud occur in several municipalities. Of the 65 in the country, Frelimo won in 64. The MDM won in the city of Beira, but still accuses Frelimo of vote fraud. Renamo, the country's second largest party, did not win in any municipality. The party claims victory in nine municipalities, including the country's capital, Maputo, and the city of Matola.
The United States of America recently issued a communiqué condemning the infestation of irregularities in the tabulation of the results of the local elections. So did the European Union and the British High Commission in Mozambique.
Senior members of the Frelimo party have already questioned the veracity of the results, including former CNE president Brazão Mazula and Samora Machel Júnior (Samito), son of the first president of independent Mozambique.
