Insurgents attacked a Mozambican Armed Forces of Mozambique (FADM) garrison in the village of Mandimba, Nangade, on June 28, killing the commander and wounding up to five soldiers, forcing them to retreat.
Local sources said that the ADFM position was attacked around 4 pm in Mandimba, approximately 30 km from the Nangade district headquarters, apparently in a surprise attack, causing much of the village's population to flee.
A local source reports that the FADM commander and four other members of the security forces were killed in the ensuing clash, while another security source claims that one was killed and five wounded with large amounts of weapons and ammunition captured.
The local source said that the Southern African Development Community (SADC) forces know the location of the rebels and have requested helicopter support from the command in Mueda, but have not received a response, so they are forced to wait for orders.
Manimda was previously the scene of clashes between security forces and insurgents on April 5, when another surprise attack left three FADM soldiers dead and five others wounded.(Zitamar)
