CNE owes 3.4 billion meticais to service providers

CNE deve 3.4 mil milhões de meticais aos prestadores de serviços

In all, the National Electoral Commission (CNE) owes 3.4 billion meticais to electoral service providers.

The CNE has not paid its suppliers since last year. As a result, the debt has accumulated to 3.4 billion meticais, the equivalent of 54 million US dollars. Of this amount, 505 million relates to debts from last year's local elections.

The amount refers not only to the debts owed to the companies that provide electoral services to the CNE, but also to the allowances and per diems paid to members of the electoral bodies at provincial and district level. It also includes debts owed to the brigades involved in voter registration.

CIP Eleições reveals that six companies have been contracted to supply electoral equipment but have not been paid for the services rendered.

Last February, the CNE publicly announced that of the 19.9 billion meticais (around 375 million dollars) in the overall budget for the local elections and the general elections on October 9, the government had only made available 6.5 billion meticais (around 30%), or 112 million dollars.
