CNDH says detention of journalist and seizure of STV equipment is a serious violation of press freedom

CNDH diz que detenção da jornalista e apreensão do equipamento da STV é uma grave violação de liberdade de imprensa

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) says that the arrest of Sheila Wilson, a journalist and human rights defender from the CDD, and the confiscation of camera equipment belonging to STV, constitutes a threat to press freedom.

"These acts, if true, represent a serious violation of human rights, and attack the right to freedom of expression and the press, as well as the right to freedom of demonstration and peaceful assembly, rights enshrined in articles 48 and 51 of the Constitution of the Republic, article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 21 of the ICCPR and other ordinary laws," the CNDH statement reads.

On the other hand, the CNDH condemns such acts and is committed to investigating the veracity of the facts in order to hold the actors accountable and restore violated rights.

The human rights institution also urges the Attorney General's Office to investigate and the PRM to take internal administrative measures to hold the moral and material actors responsible for these acts.
