The President of the Maputo City Council, Rasaque Manhique, this Friday surprised a municipal police officer carrying out acts of corruption on Avenida Karl Marx, in downtown Maputo.

The mayor was leaving his office for a visit to the Utah Building when he witnessed the agent demanding undue amounts from a semi-collective transporter.

Rasaque Manhique strongly condemned the behavior, saying that “such acts dishonor the institution and undermine the development of the Municipality of Maputo”.

“Instead of organizing, we are practicing corruption,” said the mayor to the corrupt agent. The agent caught red-handed was also forced to apologize to the driver of the chapa.

The City Council immediately took disciplinary action against the officer and reinforced its zero tolerance approach to corruption, according to a press release.
