Citizen arrested in possession of ivory tips

Cidadão detido na posse de pontas de marfim

A man aged over 40 was arrested by the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) in possession of 12 ivory tips in the Metula neighborhood, on the outskirts of the provincial capital of Cabo Delgado.

According to "Notícias", the suspect was surprised when he intended to sell the tips at 2,000 meticais per kilogram. The suspect says he was an intermediary and that he doesn't know the origin of the product.

He said that he received the order in the city of Nampula and last Friday went to the city of Pemba in the company of a friend, now on the run, to sell the ivory. However, a potential buyer reported them.

"My friend who knows the origin of this ivory ran away as soon as the police showed up at the house where we were staying."

PRM spokesperson Eugénia Nhamússua has no doubt that the individual committed a crime against biodiversity.

"We are in the process of legalizing his detention for subsequent steps," said the source.
