The process of repatriation of 1600 families from the district of Morrumbala, in Zambezia, who had taken refuge in the district of Nsanje in Malawi, due to flooding caused by tropical cyclone Ana.
The operation, which lasted seven days, consisted of the evacuation of people by land and river, in a process led by the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD), with the support of the Mozambique High Commission in Malawi, the government of Morrumbala district and Malawi, and cooperation partners.
The families, were resettled in the administrative posts of Megaza and Chire, in the district of Morrumbala, putting an end to a six-month martyrdom.
The national director for Prevention and Mitigation at INGD, César Tembe, said that this was a new experience, a fact that will deserve a deep analysis to avoid future cases.
Tembe recognizes that in calamitous situations it is difficult to control the population, however, something can be avoided by creating emergency centers in the areas of origin.
The high commissioner of Mozambique in Malawi, Elias Zimba, expressed satisfaction that the goal of repatriation of the 1,600 families has been achieved.
