The arrival of Cyclone Freddy, announced by the government authorities, has left the population of Inhambane province on high alert. Fearing worse, Margarida Matsimbe joined other people who voluntarily took shelter at the Save University reception center in the town of Maxixe.

"We arrived here at 8pm because they say Cyclone Freddy is coming, so we're here to try and escape. I only took basic utensils like children's clothes and books," she told DW.

Castro Nhanala is also in the reception center for fear of Cyclone Freddy. She still doesn't know when she'll come out of hiding. He says he didn't even have dinner on Thursday night because he was looking for a safe place. "I didn't have time to eat because it made me run here, I'm safe until dawn."

Cyclones Dineo and Idai passed through the province of Inhambane and left traces of destruction that are still fresh in Edson André's memory. "We had one of our houses destroyed here, and we had all our fences blown down by the cyclone," he recalls.

Fernando Doda, Govuro district administrator, told the press that the local government is carrying out mass mobilization so that the population leaves unsafe places.

"Abandon because you have experience of what a cyclone is, but other cyclones have also passed through here, but they have proven with A plus B that a cyclone is not something to play with," he stressed.

Cândido Sinai, the INGD delegate in Inhambane, confirms that there are support kits for the victims if necessary: "We have some mosquito nets to cover the accommodation centers in case of need, and we also have water tanks and slabs for latrines."

According to experts, the storm lost strength and became a depression, but should regenerate when it crosses the Mozambique Channel and reaches the coast of Inhambane with the classification of a strong tropical storm or cyclone during the early hours of the morning.

In addition to Inhambane province, the regions of Sofala, Gaza and Maputo are on alert.
