Cyclone Chido leaves 34 dead and a trail of destruction in northern Mozambique

Mozambique's National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD) has updated the death toll to 34 after Cyclone Chido passed through the north of the country over the weekend.

The bulletin, released on Monday night (16), indicates that 28 of the fatalities are from Cabo Delgado, three from Nampula and three from Niassa and that 319 people are injured.

The total number of people affected so far is 174,518 people, in a total of 34,219 families.

As for material damage, the INGD points to 3,598 totally destroyed and 11,744 partially destroyed houses, five houses of worship, nine schools and 34 health units, as well as the interruption of the signal of the three mobile telecommunications operators in Cabo Delgado and the cutting of the fiber optic cable between Chiúre and Namapa, in that province.

In the previous report, the agency said that 66 boats were missing, 102 destroyed and 26 fishing nets lost.

More than 200,000 customers were left without electricity during the cyclone, which was rated level 3 on a scale of 1 to 5.

However, the authorities and community leaders quoted by VOA admit that the numbers could still rise.
