Rains kill four and affect almost 50,000 people in the south zone

Chuvas fazem quatro mortos e afectam quase 50 mil pessoas na zona sul

At least four deaths and 49,984 people affected are the preliminary figures for the rains in southern Mozambique since dawn on Sunday (24).

The torrential rains were influenced by a frontal system, causing urban flooding in the cities of Xai-Xai (Gaza province) and Maputo, including the municipalities of Matola and Boane.

The data was released by the head of the National Department of Hydraulic Basin Management, Agostinho Vilanculo, during the session of the Technical Council for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (CTDGRRD) that took place today in Maputo.

Cited by AIMVilanculo added that last week, "we had moderate to heavy rainfall, locally heavy", in addition to Maputo and Gaza, also in the provinces of Inhambane, Manica and Sofala, and Nampula, Cabo Delgado and Niassa, where rainfall was between 100 and 300 millimeters.

Meanwhile, the National Meteorological Institute (INAM) is forecasting significant rainfall in the northern region over the next 15 days, due to the influence of the intertropical convergence zone with interaction of the system to the north-east of Madagascar.
