Rains awaken dormant drama in Maputo and affect more than two thousand families

Chuvas despertam drama adormecido em Maputo e afecta mais de duas mil famílias

The moderate to heavy rains that fell in the early hours of yesterday morning in the city and province of Maputo brought to light the precariousness of the sanitation system, due to urban flooding and the dragging of solid waste in residential areas.

As a result, many families found their homes, yards and streets flooded, which made mobility difficult during the first few hours.

Some households had to dedicate part of their time to removing the water, so they were unable to go to their workplaces or educational establishments as they do on normal days.

Figures shared by the National Institute for Risk and Disaster Management (INGD) and quoted by the newspaper Notícias, point to at least 2,418 families affected in the country's capital. There is also a school, a health center and 18 flooded streets in the six municipal districts.

The situation also affected the transport system, as some vehicles suffered breakdowns due to the puddles of water, combined with the deterioration of the roads in the expansion districts.

In neighborhoods like Mali, Mumemo and Pazimane, among others, few transport companies risked operating during rush hour. As a result, there were crowds at the stops, with people waiting a long time for transportation.
