Rains leave 15,000 families in the dark in southern region

Chuvas deixaram 15 mil famílias às escuras na região sul

Around 15,000 customers of the public company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) are without power in Maputo city, Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane provinces due to the rains in the south of the country.

This is one of the consequences of the passage of a low-pressure system that has been felt since early Sunday morning, marked by rainfall that, according to the National Meteorological Institute (INAM), reached 150 millimeters in a 24-hour period.

EDM explains in a statement that technical teams are already on the ground and ready to intervene in the network to gradually restore the system.

"However, the weather conditions and the inaccessibility of some sites have been major obstacles to the work, which has had an impact on the delay in restoring the power supply," he explained in a statement, quoted by the AIM.

The document adds that for "reasons of safety and prevention of electrical accidents, EDM has decided to disconnect some flooded electrical equipment and Transformer Stations that feed flooded homes".
