The Chinese government decided to block access to the digital edition of the Spanish newspaper ABC, after that newspaper published a profile of Chinese President Xi Jinping and a story about the disappearance of celebrities in the Asian country.
According to Pablo M. Díez, ABC's correspondent in Asia since 2005 and based in Beijing, the digital edition of the newspaper "is no longer available since Monday" in China. For now, the source told Agencia Efe, he has not yet received any official notification about this blockade.
"Everything indicates that it is due to two reports published over the weekend. One deals with the profile of the Chinese ruler, included in a rubric about communist dictators, and another report about celebrities who temporarily disappeared after having problems with the Chinese government," explained Pablo M. Díez.
In fact, the case of the Spanish newspaper ABC is far from being an isolated incident, as, there are also many newspapers that have seen their publications being barred by Xi Jinping's government. Among the barred newspapers are El País, El Confidencial, The New York Times or The Washington Post, The Guardian and BBC.
